Jenny-Team member at Herd Health Consultancy

Jenny Allan-Herd health and welfare consultant with HHC since 2020

My name is Jenny and I am a Veterinary specialist in bovine health management at Herd Health Consultancy. I joined the HHC team in October 2020 and previously to HHC I studied at the RVC graduating in 2014.

After that I worked in mixed practice, moving on to farm animal practice in Wiltshire and Dorset, up until the summer of 2017. I then joined the RVC livestock extension services in Dorset to start ‘The European College of Bovine Health Management residency programme’ and finished my diploma in September 2020.

I currently work with a range of progressive dairies across the UK, focussing on driving continuous improvement in herd health using outcome measures. I have a keen interest in the link between animal health and biodiversity on farm, focussing on the overlap between parasiticide usage, animal health and the pasture ecosystem, and am currently working on two metrics to enable accurate measuring of these chemicals to drive sustainable reductions.

At HHC I work with farmers internationally to drive best practice in all matters hoof health and cow comfort. I offer hoof trimming training and hoof health/cow comfort consultancy across the globe to a range of clients.

Alongside my consultancy work, I am a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Liverpool, contributing to the UK Hoof Health Registry (a national database of hoof health records). His research focuses on developing more robust genetic evaluations for lameness and exploring the social motivators behind farmers’ engagement with lameness management.

I take a compassionate view to lameness with respect to both the cow and the farmer. I am passionate about driving on-farm improvements in a caring and supportive way and work closely with farmers, trimmers, and vets to implement evidence-based hoof health strategies and continues to pursue research that supports sustainable and practical solutions.
